the costa concordia sunk off of the force the west coast of italy. the prosecution -- some cut off of the coast of italy. theoday's events marking first anniversary of the disaster began with the placing of the rocks that ripped open the ship's hull. the victim's families later read -- laid wreath's. a local priest became something of a hero for the way he welcomed in the cold, freezing, and traumatized people and comforted and calmed them. i spoke to a couple who were on their honeymoon with their 10 month old child. they came back to thank the people live up to them in their time of need, who gave them dry clothes and shelter. later, 32 lanterns will be lit in memory of the victims who did not survive. behind me, the salvage operation continues. it is the biggest and most complex the world has ever seen. the timetable for removal has slipped a bit. islanders are hoping the ships will be done by the end of september. >> a court in south africa has approved the acquisition of a local retail giant. the company must set up a fund to help local businesses after the merger. >> he is be

now. costa concordia survivors are arriving at the island. with that anniversary here, the italian cost guard are now releasing new images. new details as well to finally take that ship away. abc's lama hassan on the story, back on the case tonight. >> reporter: stunning infrared video released today shows the frantic and chaotic rescue operation the night the costa concordia ran aground. passengers scrambling down the vessel's side desperately trying to escape. a year ago, tomorrow, this massive 492-foot liner was navigating through shallow waters when it hit a rock ripping open a 230-foot gash across the hull. haunting images as we saw for ourselves. today, it is still lying on its side. an italian american company is in charge of the salvage operation with more than 400 engineers and divers working around the clock. it's a complicated operation. officials say they have to construct an underwater platform to rotate the ship, pull it upright and keep it floating. then, they'll tow it to the mainland this summer and dismantle it. the captain of the ship says he's been portrayed as

will be one year since the costa concordia disaster. people have been arriving on the island for the memorial. you know, it always amazes people to see it, that it is yes, still here in that same position. ha has changed is you can see the enormous structures, the salvage crews have built around it. they have been working 24 hours a day, seven days a week preparing to finally roll it upright and then float it out of here, probably not until the fall. we talked to the survivors today and for them, the emotional side of this is just as present, just as large. there are a lot of terrifying memories there. still anger toward the company that this happened at all and they say for the way they were treated immediately after the wreck. on sunday a service will be held for the 32 people who did not make it off that ship safely. among them an american couple, a little girl, a couple on their honeymoon. part of the service, there will be a moment of silence, a mass and crews will take the boulder that the ship struck causing that enormous gash and put it back into the sea where it originally was. eun?
